CUMBRIA U18 v NORTHUMBERLAND U18
Windermere Golf Club April 9th 2010
This long-awaited first league match of the season against the old enemy was played in balmy weather with this beautiful course in great condition for the time of year. Many of the players found the greens very tricky to read and there were a few frustrated groans as outwardly easy putts failed to drop. However the Cumbrians were in fine form and swept to a 4-0 victory in the morning foursomes with captain, Dan Park, and vice-captain, Oli Carr, leading the charge with a well-earned 3 and 1 victory over Northumberland's top pairing. Jamie McDonald and Chris Thursby overcame Elliot Wilson and Chris Forrest with a late charge to win 4 and 2. Kieran Waters and Craig Johnstone played steady and accurate golf to finally tiumph over the strong pairing of Thomas Rowland and Jack Hermeston. Youngsters, Ryan Shuttleworth and Adam Chapman, playing in their first ever U18 match completed the foursomes whitewash with a terrific win over Myles Wilson and Jake Storey.
The afternoon singles proved to be a little tougher but once again, our inspirational captain, Dan Park, showed the way with a stunning 5 and 4 victory over Andrew Scrimshaw, leading from start to finish with clinical golf. Jamie McDonald battled to a hard-earned half with rising star, Thomas Rowland, and then Cumbria hammered out the win with superb victories by Oli Carr (4 and 2), Chris Thursby (3 and 1) and Kieran Waters (2 up). The remaining matches were extremely close with all three finishing on the 18th green. The final score being a marvellous 8.5 to 3.5 in favour of Cumbria.
This is a very talented and well-adjusted team led with great skill by Dan Park and supported by an army of dedicated parents and County executives. The boys appreciate very much the support they get and it has certainly helped them tremendously. Thank you all and we hope to see you at the return match at Bellingham Golf Club on May 16th.
